Alderley EdgeCultural Landscape
A place of great natural beauty, Alderley Edge gets its name from the escarpment of red sandstone that rises 160m out of the gently rolling Cheshire Plain, known as the Edge. The Edge itself is managed by the National Trust and has spectacular views across Cheshire and towards the Peak District and Manchester, serving to remind that it is only a short distance to a cosmopolitan city. Tucked away beneath the Edge itself, Alderley Edge boasts many stunning properties, as well as various high quality restaurants and shops. In the past the Romans, Celts and Saxons were all supposed to have regarded the site as special. However, it is the legend of the Wizard and the sleeping knights that has attracted most attention. The story involves a farmer taking his horse to market when he was stopped by an old man in flowing robes. The man tried to buy the farmer’s horse but the farmer refused. The man told him he would not be able to sell his horse at market and sure enough the man could not. On his return he was again stopped by the old man who led him towards a rock. The old man struck the rock and it opened revealing a massive pair of iron gates leading to a deep cavern. Inside the cavern there was a sleeping army said to be King Arthur and his knights, waiting to decide the fate of a great battle and save their country. |
