The Route: "Reflective Landscapes"

There is a great variety to Somerset gardens and many of them reflect the investment of some of the wealthier families that have lived in the county over the past four centuries.

This project has chosen five contrasting gardens to visit in Somerset each one offering an opportunity to reflect upon the character and setting of the garden. The main anchor garden for the project is Hestercombe gardens near Taunton with gardens spanning over three centuries. Other gardens include Blenheim Gardens in Minehead, Bishop’s Palace Gardens at Wells, East Lambrook, Vivary Park in Taunton and Montacute house and garden. ...

The Region: Somerset County

Somerset is part of South West of England, which has more protected landscapes and archaeological sites than any other region in the UK. The region covers 23.837 square km and stretches for more than 360km from Gloucestershire in the north to Cornwall and the Scilly Isles in the south. The Southwest region is fortunate in having a largely warm and wet climate often providing ideal growing conditions for a wide range of trees, shrubs and flowering plants. ...

Garden Design of the Region: Somerset Garden Country

Somerset has some of the most stunning landscape parks and gardens in the South West of England. In the SW region there are 292 registered parks and gardens and Somerset has 38 of these of which 5 are identified as being of the top category grade 1 gardens, 22 grade II* and 11 grade II. There is an amazing variety ranging from the remains of a medieval deer park such as Poundisford Park near Taunton through to the Grade 1 Marjory Fish garden at East Lambrook. ...
